Lianne Mulder

Snowball Award

2026

Dr. Lianne Mulder, nominated by Mounir Samuel, is a talented activist researcher. She studied in Barbados, Jamaica, Canada and the Netherlands. She has a solid background in sociology and political sciences and completed a PhD titled ’Selecting a representative student population for healthcare provision in a diverse society: An investigation of the Leaky Pipeline in Health Professions Education’. Her results found their way to The Lancet Regional Health Europe and Plos One. They show that admission procedures in health professions education are biased against candidates with a migration background, or with parents that are not wealthy, or do not work in healthcare. These biases continue further down the career pipeline. Doctors with a migrant background are less likely to become medical specialists, especially if they are women. Her recent research continues this line of research for a wider set of health professionals, such as pharmacists and nurses.

She can be booked for consultancy work, conference presentations, trainings on inclusive and objective recruitment and selection, and guest lectures (www.healthequityresearch.nl). She combines academic research with advocacy, for example for equitable admissions to higher education. She is very active in a variety of media (radio, newspapers, television) and on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/lmamulder/) to promote equitable admissions and an inclusive and equitable healthcare system in which healthcare professionals are a reflection of their patient populations. She has also been an active champion for trans rights, published on anti-racism, and voiced concerns on the genocide in Gaza and the attacks on healthcare.
