Hebh Jamal, nominated by Anna Younes, is a brave US-American-Palestinian journalist and feminist, hailing from the Bronx, New York, living in Germany with her family. Hebh is a self-made young Palestinian woman. She is widely-regarded as an advocate against education inequality, Islamophobia and the occupation of Palestine. Hebh was profiled on many platforms such as the TeenVogue, Netflix documentary Teach Us All and many more.
Currently a freelancer, not really by choice.
She has been called inspiring on the horizon of movement activism by Angela Davis ten years ago, when she was 17. In Germany, she has been and is the rare journalist that dares publishing critical journalistic pieces about Germany and its repression against its Palestinian community, always highlighting and centering Palestinians. While the journalistic community in Germany mainly talks about Palestinians but not to them (- if at all), Hebh’s journalism revived the debate, gave more hope to those living in Germany, and educated people outside of Germany about what is going on.
Her continuous activism and reporting happened against the background of increasing anti-Palestinian repression, racist exclusions and (long-standing) attacks of visibly Muslim women in public, and a generally racist, classist and sexist culture in Germany. During the ongoing Genocide in Gaza, Hebh has lost several dozens of extended family members and has received serious backlash from state authorities such as surveillance and harassment by German police at airports, borders, while walking home from protests, right in front of their home, as well as legal threats concerning her work and actvities. Against all intimidations, Hebh continued speaking out, struggling at times with her own fear, reprisals against her family, and the constant threat of more harassment by state and legal authorities.
She is currently creating a documentary called Reason of State:Germany’s War Against Palestinians.
