Ama Kissi is a Belgian-based clinical psychologist and senior postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University, where she co-leads the Health Equity Advancement Lab. Her research examines the determinants of racialized disparities in pain care, as well as the broader impact of systemic injustice on the health and well-being of racialized communities. She publishes and speaks nationally and internationally, including in high-impact journals, on racism in healthcare and structural health inequities. In 2025, she debuted as an author with Witte zorg, Zwart leed (White Care, Black Suffering), a trade book on racism in mental healthcare.
Beyond academia, Dr. Kissi works as a self-employed clinical psychologist, regularly engages in national conversations on racism and health, and organizes and participates in public events addressing the impact of racism on health.
Her academic and societal contributions have been recognized through several awards, including a research award from the European Pain Federation in 2015 and the Ghanaians in Belgium Excellency Award in 2019. In 2025, she was awarded the prestigious and highly competitive EFIC–Grünenthal Prize and Grant, recognizing both her research on racial inequities in pain care and her broader societal impact.
